Maramures Heritage Trail (Romania), a 64 km
journey envisions a distinctive region of the Gutâi Mountains, where
rural civilization with archaic traces harmoniously cohabitates
with nature and invites the traveler to step into a magic world
of continuous surprises. Wildlife observation, nature photography,
hiking and cultural experiences represent recreational activities
to enrich visitors while wandering along the greenway. Blessed with
an abundance of wildlife and natural habitats of tremendous beauty,
Maramures represents the perfect destination for visitors to explore
and experience the natural and cultural diversity of its living
heritage. Route indicators placed along the 64 km journey offer
information to view destinations, distance compared to positioning,
different levels of route complexity, recommended means of local
transport, as well as existing tourist and directional markers.

 Starting
near the Old Baths, near the salted lakes in Ocna Sugatag, Maramures
heritage trail is divided into two loops, giving access to the Gutâi
Mountains from different angles. The trail offers an incursion into
the charming atmosphere of Maramures, a land of remarkable beauty
waiting for you to discover the traditions of the local communities
in harmony with a spectacular landscape. The traditional blankets
"cerga" of Maramures, the hand woven carpets, the popular artisans
much skilled in the art of wooden constructions and interwoven fences,
the original peasant technical installations using the dynamic forces
of water, upland wetlands visited and the view of Rooster's Crest
Nature Reserve will provide you with an authentic experience upon
entering into the majestic rural landscape of Maramures. The purpose
of the trail is to introduce the visitor into the breath-taking views
of the Maramures mosaic landscape of forests, grasslands, meadows
and raised bogs, all interwoven with the local history and culture
of a people living in supreme connection to mother nature. Along the
journey, the visitor will smell, taste, hear, feel and encounter the
specificity of a land full of surprises, Maramures .
