The
Tur River Trail (Romania) is an almost 65 km network of bicycle
routs in the Tur River Nature Reserve (www.tur-info.ro),
a proposed Natura 2000 site, located along the downstream of Tur
River, in the north-western part of Romania (Satu Mare County).
The establishment of a greenway is the initiative of the Transylvanian
Carpathia Society - Satu Mare (www.eke.ro)
- the custodian of the Tur River Natural Reserve in partnership
with the Eco-NaTur Microregion Association - the association of
10 localities situated along the Tur River.
The oxbow lakes, floodplain forests, swampy and wet meadows, and
paddles along the Tur River hide many natural rarities.
The bird fauna of these wetlands is also remarkable. 188 bird species
live here near the dead channels and fish ponds, most of them water
birds. Settlements and agricultural fields were established on the
ridge of River Tur, on plains unaffected by water. The mosaic-like
landscape was created by cutting different parts of the floodplain
woods, thus gaining rich meadows and pastures. The traveler can
find in this region charming residences like the baroque-style Vécsey
castle in the village of Livada, the Perényi castle in the village
of Túrterebes or the Galgóczy-mansion in the village of Mikula.
Masterpieces of folk art are also present in this region. Historical
churches like the reform churches from Halmi and Lazuri were built
in the 15th century. The tourism value of this region lies in the
unique virginity of natural habitats. Dead channels and fish ponds
are potential attractions for angling also for bird watch programs.
The natural reserve site has a cycling path, and the River Tur can
be explored in a canoe. The region is well-known for its plum, vine
and strawberry cultivation.
